Abstract
189,431. Boirault, L. Nov. 19, 1921, [Convention date]. Actuated by running axle. -In a brake for railway vehicles, the roller 23 which is arranged to contact with the cam 24 on the running axle 25 to apply the brakes, is carried by a lever 21 one end 26 of which slides in a fixed guide 28 and is acted upon by a non-reversible operating cam 38. The other end of the lever 21 acts through a spring buffer 17 on a rod 13 connected with the brake rigging. The cam 38 is thrown into " brakes-on " position as shown in Fig. 4 when a weighted lever 40, Figs. 2 and 5, is allowed to fall. The lever 40 is normally held up by a spring-pressed latch 45 engaging a pin 44. The latch may be drawn up to release the lever and so put on the brakes by chains on each side of the vehicle connected to a lever 50. The falling lever 40 rocks a shaft 30 on which is fixed an arm 41 adapted to engage a pin 43 on a toothed quadrant 35 loosely mounted on the shaft 30. The toothed quadrant engages a pinion 37 on a shaft 39 to which the operating cam is fixed. the cam being thus turned to apply the brakes. A locking pawl 32 engages a ratchet 34 secured to the quadrant. When the lever 40 is reset to take off the brakes, the arm 41 contacts with a pin 42 on the quadrant 35 to rotate the cam 38, but the locking pawl is first lifted by a cam 31 on the shaft 30. The brake rigging between the blocks 1, 2, Fig. 2, and the rod 13 comprises a cross-head 12 sliding in a slot 14, balance levers 7, 8 connected by a rod 11 and shackles 5, 6.
