Pistons, cooling; piston-rods. - In the method of cooling a piston and pistonrod described in the parent Specification, in which cooling-fluid is supplied to the hollow piston-rod h at the outer end of the stroke through a port e<1> in the guide and a channel c in the slipper f, the necessity of having a slipper long enough to cover the port e<1> throughout the strode is avoided by the introduction of a controlling-valve l in the supply-pipe e. The valve may be a rotary valve, as shown, and is operated by a chain or otherwise from the main shaft to close the port e<1> when not covered by the slipper f.
