Abstract

186,353. Stromberg Motor Devices Co., (Assignees of Mock, F. C., Gustafson, C. J.. and Chandler, M. E.). June 12, 1920, [Convention date]. Spray carburettors.-The pressure in the induction pipe of an engine particularly for use in aeroplanes is maintained substantially constant at low levels by a bellows 99 enclosed in a casing 97 connected to the induction pipe by the pipe 98. A rod 104 is screwed into the closed end 102 of the bellows, and carries a sleeve 114 connected by linkage 110, 95, 94 to the carburettor throttle and a second sleeve 116, which can be moved by the hand actuated lever 117<a> against the pressure exerted by the bellows and by a spring 117 placed between the two sleeves. The rod 104 enters an adjustable stop 106. To set the apparatus, the lever 117<a> is moved to the left, while the engine is on the ground; the stop is then screwed in until the spring is put under such a pressure that with the engine not running the bellows holds the throttle closed. This pressure is then a measure of the vacuum to be maintained in the induction pipe. At great altitudes complete control of the throttle is effected by the hand-lever 117<a>, while at lower levels the lever modifies the bellows control.
