Abstract

Guiding vertical play; springs, arrangement of.-The body of a vehicle is mounted upon bell-crank levers pivoted to the underframe and disposed vertically in the longitudinal plane of the vehicle with their upper arms extending in the same inclined direction relative to the underframe, the body moving forwards and backwards in the longitudinal plane of the vehicle against the action of springs connected to one arm of each bell-crank lever and extending parallel to the plane of the underframe. As applied to a motor-cycle side-car, the underframe 1 is provided at each side with a pair of spaced bell-crank levers 2, 3 pivoted at 4 to transverse members secured by straps 6, 6<a> upon the underframe. The upper arms 7, 7a of the levers extend obliquely forwards or rearwards and to their upper ends are pivoted transverse bearer members 8, 8<a> of the body. The lower arms 9, 9<a> also extend forwards or rearwards and are connected at each side by rods 10. The rear arms 9 are connected by rods 12 to springs 13 anchored by rods 14 to lugs 15 on the frame. The rods 12, 14 may be adjustable in length. Any other arrangement of spring parallel to the frame may be used, such as springs intermediate between and connected by rods to the lower arms of each pair of bell-crank levers, and the springs may be mounted in casings. The adjacent ends of the last-mentioned rods may be connected together by one or more links.
