Abstract

Feed devices; slides and carriages.-Tool or work holders may be fed or adjusted by means of a rack and pinion for rapid traverse or by a fine pitch screw for fine adjustment. The holder F, Fig. 1, provided with a socket L, is slidably mounted on a main cylindrical guide D and on a bar E, being locked to the latter at will by an eyebolt K, or by other means. The guide is rotatably mounted in a bearing C' which can swivel about two mutually perpendicular axes. Coarse adjustment is effected by the rack D<1> on the guide and pinion F', the bar E then sliding freely through the head. Fine adjustment is effected by a handwheel J, rotatable in a bracket H but axially fixed, engaging a fine pitch screw-thread E<1> on the bar, the latter then being locked to the head. The screw may have a micrometer scale attached. The main guide may be replaced by the V-slide of a machine. In one application to a grinding machine, a bedplate B, Fig. 4, carries the base A<1>, on which the guide is mounted, on a slide Z, and also carries the grinding wheel P and its support O, the article M to be ground being held in a block N secured to the socket. In another arrangement, the guide is horizontal, and the holder carries the blank, such as a reamer, to be traversed past a grinding wheel.
