364,888. Gauging-devices. KEARNS & CO., Ltd., H. W. and KEARNS, J. R. C., Broadheath, near Manchester. Feb. 9, 1931, No. 4015. [Class 83 (iii).] A vernier scale device for measuring the traversing movements of the slides of horizontal boring, surfacing, milling, &c., and similar machines is constituted to enable the vernier to be placed at the front of the machine without limiting the amount of traverse it is possible to measure. A longitudinal carriage b, sliding on the bed a of a machine of the above type, carries a transversely movable table c, to the side of which is slidably attached a scale bar i clamped against movement by screws l. The vernier e, mounted in a bracket on the carriage b at the front of the machine so as to be easily viewed, is used with the scale bar in the position shown for movements of the table c to the right, but when the table is moved to the left, the scale is unclamped and withdrawn towards the right, the displacements of the scale past the vernier then give the required measurements.
