[Classes 60 and 145 (i)] [Also in Groups XVI and XXII] A machine for producing flat and curved type characters, patterns, cams, &c. in wood, fibre, metal, &c. by cutting, routing, grinding, &c. and comprising an upper carriage with a worktable 17 mounted on a lower 'carriage 13 so as to be movable under the tool in two directions at right-angles by means of a pantograph linkage 27 with a tracer 30 movable over a pattern 31, is provided with a removable holder 20 for curved work adapted to be coupled to move with the upper carriage relatively to the lower carriage in the one component direction, and to be rotated by movement of the carriages in the other component direction, and with means for relative vertical adjustment of the carriages and tool to suit either flat work or curved work. The holder 20 is a cylinder mounted in bearings 22 on cross-bars 23 slidable on longitudinal guide rails 25 on the main frame of the machine, and is provided at each end with a pinion 19 for engagement with racks 18 on the work-table 17, which slides on the longitudinal members 14, 15 of the carriage 13. The main frame is of rectangular form with four legs which guide an inner rectangular frame 3, on the side members 5 of which the carriage 13 runs. The frame 3 is vertically adjustable by means of a hand wheel 11 and worm gearing. The connections 28, 29 of the pantograph linkage to the main frame and to the work-table are telescopic or otherwise adapted to allow for the vertical adjustment of the carriages. One or more individual electric motors for one or more tools are carried by hinged arms attachable to a top rail with a dovetailed face.
