Abstract

Steam-generator furnaces; fuel, feeding; gaseous-fuel fittings.-A process and apparatus for the combustion of solid fuel in boiler furnaces with recovery of the by-products of the fuel consists in supplying the fuel to the rear end of a reversible travelling grate 3 through a retort 7 arranged in the smoke-box 5 of the boiler 1. The gases escaping from the fuel in the retort pass into the perforated pipe 9, on which the screw 10 is mounted for feeding the fuel through the retort, and thence to condensing and purifying plant, the residual gases being returned through the pipe 16 to the furnace When starting the apparatus, fuel is fed forwardly on the grate 3 in the ordinary way, the grate being afterwards reversed to feed degasified fuel from the retort to the furnace 2.
