Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 1913 Application filed November 18, 1912. Serial No. 732,106.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED O. GUTSGH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan, in the countyyof Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have im'entcd certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention refers to furnaces and particularly to steam generating furnaces applicable either to stationary or portable boilers, its object being to provide a simple, economical and efiicient means for economically utilizing soft coal primarily as a fuel. whereby great economy in the utilization of the heat units thereof is bad.
Another object of my inventionis to provide means for consuming all of the waste products of combustion, whereby smoke nuisance is avoided.
\Vith the above and other minor objects in view the invention consists in what is herein described and claimed with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The drawing illustrates in diagram a sectional elevation with parts broken away of a furnace embodying the features of my invention.
Referring by characters to the drawing 1 represents the shell of a boiler having frontand rear walls or tube sheets 2, 2, which are connected by the usual flues 3, the same establishing communication between the combustion chamber 4 and a rear mixing charm her 5 that incases the rear tube sheet and is provided with a valve-controlled stack 6 of ordinary construction. The front tube sheet 2 forms one wall of the combustion chamber 6, which chamber is provided with the usual fire pot and grate 7, together with an ashpit 8 and a draft door 9 that is located within the front wall of the combustion chamber. This front wall is also provided with a fuel door 10, all of which above mechanism forms no part of my invention.
Located within the combustion chamber 6 above the fire-pot thereof is a generating retort 11 having a sectional. dumping bottom 12 and a fuel feed door-controlled opening 13. Leading from the generating retort to the rear chamber 5 is discharge pipe 14 that is suitably disposed within the boiler and through which gases from said retort are adapted to travel and be discharged within the chamber aforesaid. I also provide a combustion retort 15 that is suitably disposed within the boiler below its flues as shown, This combustion retort 15 communicates with the rear chamber 5 through a receiving pipe 15, the opposite end of said combustion retort being providechwith a nozzle 1.6 that extends into the combustion chamber 4 and is preferably directed' toward the front tube-sheet 2. The combustion retort 15 has a pipe 14 extending therein, which pipe is adapted to discharge forwardly and toward the combustion chamber 1 and communicates with a discharge mouth of a fan 17, the suction mouth of which fan is connected to the steamdome 1 of the boiler by a pipe 17 that has a valve-controlled branch 18 for the introduction of air, whereby a. mixture of steam and air may be drawn into the fan and discharged therefrom, into the combustion retort, in the direction asindicated by the arrow. The combustion retort is also provided with a fuel pipe 19 that is adapted to conduct volatile fluids such as gasolene, crude oil, or the like from a supply pipe 19', the admission of this supply to the retort being under control of a suitable valve 20..
The gas discharge pipe 14, which directs the gases from the. generating retort to the rear chamber 5 is, as illustrated, shown'as having a gas purifier 21 inserted therein, the same being provided for the purpose of utilizing any well-known method of dry distillation, whereby the that pass from said generating retort may, if desired, be purified of explosives. lt 1S apparent however that I may inter-pose suitable purifying apparatus for the gases in any convenient position between the generating retort and combustion retort, without departing from the spirit of my invention. v
In starting the steam generator the generating retort is first supplied with soft coal, there being a small supply of coal also placed within the fire-pot 4 and when the fuel is ignited the gases-from the retort are caused to travel through the'pipe l tintothe chamber 5 and from thence into the combustion retort. At this point steam and air are caused to commingle with the gases in the form of a blast, which blast is gen- 7 erated from the fan 17. The gases in the generating retort are then ignited by flashes of gaso-lene or crude oil and owing to the fact that these gases are quite hot and in a.
nascent state they will ignite and burn by the addition of the superheated steam and air before mentioned, the said steam being superheated through its contact with the hot gases. Thus it will be seen that the ignited gases Within the generating retort are caused to be discharged through the nozzle 16 so as to direct the flame through the fire tubes. By adding fresh air at certain points in the circulating system it is apparent that the gases are oxidized continually.
In starting the furnace the valve Within the stack 6 is opened and after the soft coal within th generating retorthas beendeprived of its gases the sectional. bottom of said retort will be opened, whereby the remaining product, namely coke, Will be caused to drop into the furnace where it serves as a fuel. Thereafter this operation is repeated the products of combustion being circulated from front to rear and the soft coal is supplied in quantities to the generating retort in proportion to the consumption.
lVhile I have shown and described my invention in connection with a stationary boiler it is apparent that any form or boiler may be utiiized and that the apparatus may be economically applied to locomotives, min rine boilers, or for any purpose 'Where'coal is utilized for generating heat.
I claim:
1. In a furnace, its shell having a forwardly grated bottom combustion chamber and rear chamber connected thereto by flees; the combination of a generator retort disposed. above the grated bottom of the combustion. chamber, pipe connection bc-- tween the generating retort and rear furrow/res chamber, a combustion retort in communication with said rear chamber and combustion chamber, means for admitting a mixture of: air and steam to said combustion retort, and means for supplying'gaseous fluid to theaio'resaid combustion retort.
3. In a furnace having a forwardly disposed combustion chamber, a rearward chamber, and fines connecting the forward combustion chamber and rearward chamber; the combination of a generating retort disposed within the combustion chamber, the generating retort being provided With a shifta'ble bottom, a pipe in communication with the generating retort and rear chamber, a combustion retort in communication with the rear chamber and combustion chamber, means for admitting air and steam to the combustion retort, means for superheating the steam, and means for admit-ting gaseous fluid to said combustion retort.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set in hand at Seattle in the county of King and State of Washington in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALFRED O. GUTSCH. lVitnes-ses F. T. WHEELER, GEO. PARKER.
