Slicing.-In a wood-slicing machine such as is used for cutting veneers, the knife holder P with the knife C is given a cross movement on the carriage E as the same is moved by the racks K, the resultant motion of the knife being in the direction OW. For this purpose a rack H formed on the slide D gears with a pinion I on a vertical shaft R mounted on the carriage E and carrying at its lower end a pinion S gearing with a rack T capable of sliding on the frame until checked by a stop U<1>. Thereafter the slide D is constrained to move across the carriage. A clutch (not shown) is provided for disengaging the pinion S from the shaft R when desired.
