Abstract

[Class 83 (iii)] A power-operated feed mechanism for a planing or like machine comprises two electric motors, controlled from the table movement, one of the motors actuating the feed and the second being arranged to reset a feed-determining slide operated by the first motor. The feed motor a, which is started by the operation of the tablecontrolled master switch of the main motor, drives a shaft b connected by a two-speed gear pair c. d to a shaft g driving the tool box or boxes, (not shown), the feed movement occurring at the end of the return table movement before the tool engages the work. A gear h on shaft b drives through a gear i and clutch k, a shaft j which, through worm gearing n, drives the wheel p of a differential gear connected through a gear r with the feed-determining rack slide s. This slide carries a striker t adapted to open a switch v carried by an adjustable rack w which can be set by a hand-wheel 2. If the rack s should over-run, a striker y thereon operates a safety switch x on the rack to disconnect motor a. The rack is reset after its traverse by a motor 7 which is started by the actuation of the master switch at the end of the cutting stroke. The motor 7 through worm gearing 8 drives the planet carrier 9 of the differential gearing. The striker 11 actuates switch 12 to cut out the resetting motor. If the rack s over-runs on this movement a safety switch 14 is operated. For rapid traverse of the feed boxes the clutch i is disengaged and the motor a run in either direction without traversing the rack slide s.
