Abstract

586,145. Lathes. AVIMO, Ltd., and STEVENS, H. C. M. Aug. 11, 1944, No. 15363. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a lathe in which a rotary tool spindle is carried by a pivoted arm slidable by means of a lead screw and the depth of cut controlled by a stop on the arm co-operating with a stationary abutment, a slidable housing interconnected with the arm carries a nut which is movable into and out of engagement with the lead screw, a catch securing the nut in its operative condition and means being provided for releasing the catch in response to pivotal movement of the tool-carrying arm. A thread-milling or grinding wheel z is carried at the end of a spindle y mounted in an arm x. The arm is fastened to a bar u rotatable and slidable in guides on the machine frame. A housing 1, also connected to slide with the bar u, carries an electric motor w for driving the tool-spindle and houses a split nut n. The latter is engaged with a lead screw k driven through gearing i from the work spindle b by means of a hand lever fastened to a spindle p; but may be disengaged automatically when an operation is completed by a stop 9 on the lower end of the arm x striking a rod t and thus moving a retaining catch which normally holds the nut-halves closed against spring pressure applied to the operating handle. In a screw-threading operation on a workpiece e, the arm x is initially positioned by means of a stop 11, depth of cut is determined by drawing the arm towards the workpiece by a handle 4 against the tension of a spring 3 until an adjustable abutment 5, Fig. 3, springs into engagement with an adjustable abutment 6; on reaching the end of this abutment the arm and tool are withdrawn from the work and the stop 9 then operates to stop the feed movement. A supplementary tool spindle 12 is provided axially opposite the work and may carry endfacing cutters 13. Feed of the tool is by hand-lever 14 and linkage 15 adapted to give quick movement up to the work and slow feed.
