Abstract
559,444. Lathes. MARSHALL, SONS, & CO. (SUCCESSORS), Ltd., and RICHARDS, S. H. Feb. 11, 1943, No. 2280. [Class 83 (iii)] In a machine for turning the end of a bar or rod, a cutter is carried by a rotary tool-head and is adjusted automatically during the axial feed of the work into the head by a former engaging the end of the work to be moved thereby. The machine comprises a tailstock 3 in which the work 18 is secured by a self-centring chuck 19 and which is fed towards the headstock 2 by a screw rotated by a handwheel 11 or by reduction gearing 8 driven by a belt 7 from the headstock. The drive from the reduction gearing is controlled by a linkage 12 and a handle 13. The headstock-spindle 4 is driven by two belts 5 from an elec!ric motor 6 and carries a toolholder 28 mounted on a pivot 25 therein. A radial spring (not shown) maintains an arm 26 on the pivot in contact with a conical former 36 slidably keyed within the spindle 4 and normally pressed by a spring 24 to the rearward position shown in Fig. 3. In operation, the work is advanced through a guide bush 33 on the spindle 4 and the cutter 29 in the holder 28 cuts a reduced parallel end thereon until the end of the work engages the base of a recess 34 in the former 36 to carry it forward. The tool-holder is thereby rocked to cut a tapered portion on the work until the end of the former 36 meets a stationary switch 21, Fig. 2, to stop the motor 6. The length of the parallel end of the work may be varied by altering the length of the recess 34 and the inward movement of the toolholder 28 is limited by a screw 32, Fig. 2. A splash-guard 16, removable by a handle 17, may be provided. Lubricating cutting tools and work.-Fluid is supplied by a flexible pipe 14 to an attachment 20 journalled on the former 36 and thence by the interior of the former and the sleeve 4 to the cutting tool, as shown by arrows in Fig. 3.
