Abstract

1,041,062. Lathe details. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. April 2, 1964 [April 2, 1963], No. 12928/63. Heading B3T. A lathe comprises a rotary tool spindle 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), supported on a bed 3 for axial movement relative to a non-rotating workpiece 5 carried in a holder 4. A head stock 6 has a two-speed feed drive, and a unit 7 provides power for the feed and also for rotation of spindle 1. A tool head 8 carried by the spindle has a cutting tool 9 which is radially movable in a tool holder 10. Head 8 has a slot 15, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), in which the tool slide 16 is mounted. A spigot 26 carries a cam segment 27 which co-operates with a follower 22 and a drill 32 projects, from the head. Cam spigot 26 is connected to a draw bar 33 which carries a fork 36 engageable with an adjustable stop 38 on a rod 37, so that the relative movement between cam 27, and follower 22, is controlled by this stop. In operation, spindle 1 is fed axially so that tool 9 cuts surface 5a on the work. Head 8 continues to advance so that follower 22 moves along cam 27, and tapered surface 5b is machined. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the control of cam 27 is provided by a draw bar 12 having nuts 14, which cooperate with stop 13.
