Abstract

176,880. Kirk, B. Dec. 14, 1920. Combined drawing and twisting arrangements; rollers and roller h e a d s ; spindle apparatus; moistening; spindle-driving apparatus.-Roving from a revolving bobbin is simultaneously drawn and twisted by a drawing-apparatus which rotates at or approximately at the same speed as the supply-bobbin, and the spun yarn is continuously led for treatment by any subsequent process until the supply-bobbin is exhausted. A spindle 3, 3a, Fig. 1, driven by a wharl 22 carries a holder 2 for the roving and a drawing- apparatus 4, and the roving 1 passes over or around an abutment 5 which serves to retain the twist. The drawing-apparatus is driven through gearing, comprising a draft change wheel 16 and a twist-change wheel 32, from a wharl 27 and comprises, as shown in Fig. 1, drawing- rollers 11, 12, retaining-rollers 6, 6<a>, one or more straps 7, an adjustable breast-plate 8 and guides 9, 10, shown in detail in Fig. 5, for the straps and the roving. The wharls 22, 27 mav be driven by a single band 39 tensioned by a pulley, as shown in Fig. 7. The drawing-apparatus is modified to suit the kind of fibre being treated, and may comprise a single row of gills and fallers. For wet spinning the breast-plate is dispensed with and hot or cold water is led by a pipe into the holder 2. For cotton spinning three pairs of rollers weighted by saddles and springs are employed. The holder 2 may be mounted on a driven spindle separate from that which carries the drawing-apparatus, as shown in Fig. 15, and the roving may be removed from its bobbin and the end drawn from the inside or outside of the roving-mass.
