Drawing-frames; silver guides.-The number of processes between the carding engines and spinning frames is reduced by a method of treating yarn consisting in passing the carded silver through a drawing-frame having the majority or all of its top rollers positively driven while doubling eight or more ends, drawing the resultant sliver into roving in a slubbing-frame having at least four pairs of rollers and drawing the roving while doubling in a roving-frame having at least four pairs of rollers to produce a final roving for spinning. The drawing-frame may comprise at least five pairs of rollers and the fluted bottom rollers 6, Figs. 1 and 3, are continuous while the leather covered top rollers 7 are in separate section and are positively driven by pinions 14, 15 from the bottom rollers. The respective shafts 19, 31, 40 of the front, fourth and sixth lines of bottom rollers are driven at appropriate speeds by a belt pulley 18 and through sets of gearing 20, 21, 28, 29; 32, 33, 38, 39, Fig. 2, while the intermediate rollers are driven by gearing at the opposite end of the machine, viz :-the second roller from the front roller, the third from the fourth, and the fifth from the sixth.
