Abstract

176,518. Schollar, P. W., and Calthrop's Aerial Patents, Ltd., E. R. Dec. 9, 1920. Parachutes.-Members of a number of twopart devices are connected to separate parachutes and are accessible one at a time for connection to a corresponding member on each aviator's harness. The parachutes are housed in recesses in the exterior of the fuselage of an aeroplane or the envelope or car body of an airship, and are each covered with fabric which is stripped off when the load is applied to the load rope. Each rope is also covered with a stripping-piece to preserve it from the weather and to prevent flogging, and is connected to a member C of the two-part device. The members C are held in spring jaws H on a rack J fixed outside a door, which opens on hinges on its lower edge and is provided with an extension which covers the rack in its closed position. When an aviator has inserted his connecting-member into the top member C and left the aircraft, a guard-plate K is forced down by a spring N until the tongue L contacts with the next member C, which is then available for the next aviator. The guard-plate K is guided by a fin sliding in a groove Q which may be cut away at R so that the ground-plate can be turned angularly for inspection of all the members C.
