Abstract
715,078. Releasable cockpit canopies for aircraft. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 23, 1953 [Jan. 25, 1952], No. 2109/52. Class 4 A canopy for an aircraft cockpit is hinged at its back to the aircraft structure and held in its normal position by catches which are releasable to enable the canopy to be thrown open by a spring-loaded lever mechanism. The canopy 1 is pivoted at 3 to the fuselage 4 by hinges which may be releasable as described in Specification 711,987. It is provided along its lower edges with hooks 16 engaged in the closed position by pins 17 formed on levers 18 pivoted to the fuselage,and connected by tie rods 19 mounted inside the cockpit for operation by the pilot to release the canopy in an emergency. The canopy is urged into the open position by rods 15 each pivoted at one end to the canopy and at the other to one extremity of a lever 12, which levers are pivoted to the fuselage at 14 and urged into the canopy-releasing direction by torsion springs 13. In an alternative embodiment Figs. 1 and 2, (not shown), the mechanism to urge the canopy into the open position comprises a pair of interconnected toggle links loaded by a coiled tension spring.
