Abstract

566,847. Fastenings. MALCOLM, Ltd., R., and LOBELLE, M. J. O. June 11, 1942, No. 8017. [Class 44] [Also in Group XXXIII] A sliding hood for an aircraft which can be jettisoned whatever position it may be in, has foot pieces at its sides sliding in rails hinged on the two sides of the aircraft and connected by linkage to members normally held in locked position by trigger mechanism a strong spring urging the members to move both guide rails simultaneously into their release position when the mechanism is actuated. An inflatable packing renders the hood air-tight when it is in the closed position. A hood 10 comprising two separated sheets of translucent material is carried by members 12, having projections 13, Fig. 3, engaged by hinged rails 14 along which the members 12 can slide rearwardly over a fixed part 7 which also may be translucent. The rails 14 are connected by links 19 to plungers 21 sliding through air-tight packing rings 22 in brackets 52 secured to the sides of the fuselage and connected together by a transverse hollow member 11. The inner ends of the plungers 21 are connected by links 24 to levers 25 pivoted in the member 11 and connected to two links 30, 30a pivoted on pins 31, 31a on the end of a short shaft 32 rotatable in a sleeve 33, Fig. 5, on 'the member 11. A lever 35 is secured on the outer end of the shaft 32 which is biassed by a spring 39 in a direction to thrust the links 30, 30a outwards, the end of the lever 35 being notched to engage a pin 44 on a lever 42. The lever 42 is moved to disengage the lever 35 by a Bowden cable 48 operated by a pull on a button 49, Fig. 1, a branch cable leading to an external handle 50 enabling the hood to be released from outside the aircraft. The links 19, plungers 21 and levers 25 may be duplicated towards the forward end of the rails 14, the levers 25 on each side being mounted on a common shaft so as to move simultaneously. An inflatable packing 17 extends along a plate 16 to bear against the inside surfaces of the members 12 and also around the forward edge of the windscreen' and rear edge of the cockpit opening to render the hood air-tight against internal pressure..
