Abstract

568,413. Cockpit hoods for aircraft. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. Aug. 1, 1943, No. 8734. [Class 4] A hood for the cockpit of an aeroplane comprises a streamlined tail portion capable of sliding rearwardly and provided with quickrelease mechanism to enable the hood to be jettisoned in an emergency. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the hood consists of a single transparent sheet 1 provided with a metal framing 2 along the edges, and at the rear portion with stiffening members 12, 13, 15 to which is secured a metal sheet 14, thus forming an enclosed tail section. Guide channels 4 are provided at the sides of the cockpit, and a centre channel 5 is mounted on the fuselage at the rear of the cockpit. These channels receive wheeled runners 20 provided with tapered plugs 23 which engage in correspondingly formed sockets 32 in brackets 30, 31 at the front corners of the hood and middle of the transverse stiffener 12 respectively. The plugs are normally retained in their sockets by means of spring-loaded taper pins 33 connected by cables 39 to a coupling plate 40. The latter is attached to a pivoted lever 41 connected by a further cable 45 to a release handle 46 at the side of the cockpit. Operation of the handle 46 causes simultaneous release of the taper pins 33 from the runners 20, to permit jettisoning of the hood. An alternative form of release is spring-loaded and held in place by a retaining pin, the release of which enables the spring to operate the withdrawal cable 45. Operating mechanism for opening and closing the hood consists of chain-and-sprocket gearing 66, 67, 68, actuated by a hand wheel 60 at the side of the cockpit and connected by a shaft 69 and universal joints to chain-and-sprocket gearing 70, 71, 72, operating the runner in the rear centre channel 5. According to the Provisional Specification, the guide channels 4, 5 may be provided with inclined portions in order that the hood may lift during its rearward movement.
