Belts, placing on and throwing off pulleys.-Relates to mechanism of the kind comprising a wheel such as 3 operated by a hand chain and carrying rollers for supporting the belt when idle and an arm for placing the belt on the pulley. There are two such rollers 5, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, close to the pulley rim and a. middle one 5<1> close to the centre, all carried on arms 4 secured to the wheel 3. From the rollers 5 5<1> arms 6, 8 extend radially to keep the idle belt from fouling the pulley. The wheel 3 rides on three fixed trunnions 2. The placing-on arm 9, which carries an inclined hand 10, Figs. 3 and 9, normally lies between two spring bolts 16, 17, Fig. 5, and is locked by them. The belt is moved off the pulley by a shifter comprising a rectangular sliding-rod 23 with roller-covered arms 25, 27 operated by'cords 30, 31. To place the belt on the pulley, a cord 32 is pulled which turns a lever 18, Fig. 5, so withdrawing the bolts 16, 17 and setting the arm 9 free. A pull on the chain 12 turns the wheel 3 bringing the hand 10 to the position shown in Fig. 9, the action being helped by moving the shifter 23 by a cord 30. When the wheel 3 has turned right round, the arm 9 strikes an incline on the bolt 16, Fig. 5, so that the bolt is thrust out of the way and snaps back behind the arm 9, locking it as at first. The wheel 3 carries a second socket 11, Fig. 1, for an additional placing-on arm, to meet the case of heavy belts.
