Abstract
587,296. Loading and unloading vehicles; winches. BROOKS (MISTLEY), Ltd., CRISP, F. V., and POWELL, L. Nov. 14, 1944, No. 22489. [Classes 78 (iii), 78 (iv) and 78 (v)] Apparatus for unloading and loading goods such as sacks from or on to vehicles comprises a framework A resting on the ground and against a side of the vehicle and having a platform P which is raised in guides B by a wire E passing over rollers D, D<1> on the framework and connected to a cable of a winch H on the vehicle chassis. The winch is driven from a power take-off shaft O through a clutch P and bevel gearing L, M. The clutch is operated by a cone N' which is moved longitudinally on a shaft N by a rock shaft T which engages a yoke on the cone and is rocked by an arm W operable from the rear of the vehicle through a wire X connected to a handle Z. An arm V on the shaft T operates a bell crank lever V to apply or release a brake on the drum K. For loading sacks on to the vehicle the arm W is moved by the operator to position 3, Fig. 1, whereby the clutch is engaged and the winch driven so as to raise the platform P to the level of the vehicle floor. The wire X is then released to allow the arm W to drop back to position 1 in which the clutch is disengaged and the brake applied. After transferring the sacks to the vehicle, the arm is moved to position 2 to effect release of the brake and disengage the clutch so that the platform may now fall by its own weight to the ground.
