A vehicle wheel has means on its outer face for the attachment of non-skid chains so that the chains may be stowed on the wheel face when not in operative position across the tyre tread surface, the said means providing for tensioning of the chains when stowed to prevent objectionable rattle. Fig. 2 shows a wheel fitted with four groups of anti-skid chains, each group comprising three Y-connected chains 10, 12, 13. The chains 10 are connected one to each end 5 of two draw bolts 6 diametrically disposed at right-angles to each other on the wheel face with their ends slidably guided in lugs 4 fixedly spaced 90 degrees apart on the wheel. Each draw bolt 6 comprises a rotable sleeve engaging oppositely screw-threaded end bolts 5 to allow simultaneous radially inner or outer movement on the end bolts for tensioning of the attached chains. Fig. 2 shows the chains in operative position with the chains 12, 13 hooked into rings on the rear face of the wheel, and Fig. 3 shows the chains in the stowed position. In an alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 7 the ends 26 of four chain groups, each as shown in Fig. 11, are connected one to each end of two diametrically spaced parallel bars 21, 31 slidably mounted at their centres 23 on diametrically spaced lugs 17 bolted to the wheel and interconnected by a draw bolt 16, 14 similar to the draw bolt 6 above. Fig. 7 shows the chains in stowed position with the ends 33 of the chains engaged in pairs in two fixed anchorage rings 19 equi-spaced angularly between the bars 21, 31. In a further arrangement the bars 21, 31 are each replaced by a pair of chaincarrying arms hinged to a centre piece slidably guided on the wheel face, the two arms each providing for winding of a chain group therearound, for stowage, when swung away from the plane of the wheel. Anchorage hooks for the free end of each chain group are provided on two spring-loaded tiltable hook supports mounted one on each centre-piece guide.
