Abstract
174,077. Weiss, J. Jan. 13, 1921, [Convention date]. Coking processes.-In the low-temperature distillation of solid fuels for the production of tar, semi-coke, and gas, the fuel is heated in a rotary retort with hot gases passed through the retort in counter-current to the fuel, the gases being reduced in temperature by admixture with an inflammable gas of low temperature. The cooling gases may be those produced in the apparatus after they have been freed from tar and water vapour. The rotary retort may be heated by the combustion of coal dust or of the pulverised semi-coke obtained from the retort. The heat liberated by condensation of the tar &c. may be utilized to preheat the gases delivered to the retort or these gases may be passed through the hot coke which is cooled thereby. The heat of the hot gases may be used to preheat the gases entering the retort by the use of heat-exchanging devices.
