Abstract

171,316. Clarkson, T. Dec. 10, 1920. Axles and axle structures. -Each of the two parts of the rear axle extending one on each side of the differential gear is tapered off towards each end from an intermediate point B. Roller bearings F, F<1> are disposed at this point between the axle A and a fixed axle casing H, the load being carried at a part H<2> of the casing above the roller bearings. The wheel hub 0 is tapered internally to engage the outer tapered portion of the axle, and the half axle is splined at each end C, E, to permit a road wheel D and a differential gear wheel respectively to be secured thereto. A sleeve Q bolted to the wheel hub engages the splines C, and a nut R<1> secures the wheel to the axle. The rollers F, F<1> are tapered with the larger ends adjacent the part B. The outer race is carried in a sleeve J and washers L placed between a flange K<1> thereon and the part H<1> of the axle casing to which the flange is bolted permit adjustment of the races. Cork or other dust-excluding rings P are fitted in a flange K on the sleeve J. The lower edge S<1> of a web S integral with the casing H is thickened to form a rib.
