418,965. Ball and roller bearings. VEREINIGTE STAHLWERKE AKT.-GES., 67, Breitestrasse, D³sseldorf, Germany. June 8, 1934, Nos. 17040 and 17041. Convention dates, June 17, 1933 and July 18, 1933. [Class 12 (i).] In a railway vehicle axle carrying fixed and loose wheels and rotatably mounted in a casing 1 through the medium of a pair of taper roller bearings 3-5, the loose wheel 6 is mounted in an axially fixed manner on an enlarged end 2<a> of the axle 2 between a flange 7 and a lateral thrust ball bearing 8-10, while the fixed wheel 11 is capable of a limited axial displacement whereby the play of both bearings 3-5 may be adjusted and is secured in any axial position by means of a nut 13. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the ring 8 of the hub thrust bearing is secured to the axle casing 1 and consequently relative rotation between the rings 8, 10 of the bearing occurs continuously ; in a modification, Fig. 5, one ring 8 is secured to the axle 2 and rotation between the rings occurs only when the vehicle is negotiating a curve. In order to secure the wheel 11 to the axle 2 a key 12 may be used in known manner, while the nut 13 is fixed by providing it with peripheral gaps into which the edges of an interposed washer 14 are turned ; or the wheel hub may be provided with an integral castellated nut working directly on the axle 2.
