Abstract
406,231. Bearings. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO., Denber Avenue, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A. Oct. 3, 1933, No. 27119. Convention date, Jan. 16. [Class 12 (i).] An axle-bearing construction for rail vehicles comprises two series of tapered roller bearings 6 mounted on the axle so that the larger ends of the inner races 1 face each other, these bearings being arranged in enlarged end portions of a housing 8 the middle portion 13 of which is longer than the width of the pedestal jaws 12 but narrow enough for them to straddle. This construction enables railway trucks fitted with plain bearings to be fitted with roller bearings with no alteration other than the cutting off of the journal collars. Further, a defective roller bearing may be replaced by a plain bearing. The inner races 1 are spaced by a sleeve 4 and the outer races 7 engage annular channels in the housing 8, which is split horizontally into two parts secured by bolts 11. An adjusting shim engages one of the channels for the outer races. The rollers 6 are shorter than their diameter. The housing 8 is provided with an end cover 9 secured by cap screws and its top portion co-operates with the usual truck equalizer.
