Abstract

170,904. Cummins, F. July 6, 1920. Retort furnaces.- In a setting for vertical gas retorts, a pair of combustion chambers is provided for each retort, and each chamber has at its upper end an independently - c o n - trolled outlet for the heating-gases. A setting with two rows of retorts is divided by cross, walls 1, 6 into compartments corresponding in number with the retorts, and each of these in turn is divided into two chambers by a vertical wall 3. The chambers are supplied at their lower ends with gas and air through ports 10, 11 respectively, and communicate at their upper ends through dampercontrolled openings 16 with horizontal flues 17<a>, of which four are provided, one for each row of chambers. These flues communicate in turn through damper-controlled openings 21 with upper flues 18 leading to the chimney. Perforated tubes 13 may be fitted in the combustion chambers. and additional air inlets may be provided at a higher level. The lower parts of the retorts are surrounded by silica jackets. Observation devices; indicators.-Observation openings 24 are provided in the outer walls of the setting, and opposite these openings the inner walls are formed with thin portions 23, the state of incandescence of which gives some indication of the temperature conditions in the inner chambers.
