Blocks, special shapes of.-A furnace arch is built up of blocks 26, Figs. 1 and 6, detachably supported by hanger bars 27 engaging with recesses 26<b> in the heads 26<a> of the blocks and resting on the lower flanges of supplementary beams 25 which are supported by hangers 21 on main beams 20. The hangers 21 are adapted to slide on the lower flanges of the beams 20 and are provided with recesses having inwardly projecting bosses engaging with upper short flanges on the beams 25 which may be inclined or horizontal and may be in one or more sections. Detachable extensions 28, Fig. 8, at the ends of the beams 25 support crown blocks 30 having corrugated sides and recesses engaging with the beam extension 28. An apron wall 32 rests upon the inner beam 20 and upon a plate 31 supported by the extensions 28. The blocks are arranged in the arch so that they may break jcint longitudinally, but with the modified form of block shown in Fig. 9, in which the heads 26<c> are centrally disposed the longitudinal joints are in alignment. Fig. 11 shows a modified form of block provided with recesses 26<f> adapted to engage with hangers 27<a> of the form shown in Fig. 13. The recesses 26f may be arranged centrally, in which case the longitudinal joints of the bricks will be in alignment instead of staggered, as shown in Fig. 11. Fig. 15 shows a modified form of block having all its upper corners intact and with an inverted T-shape recess and clearance notch 26<g> for the hanger.
