Feed-water, supplying and controlling. - In steam-condensing and boiler-feed plant, in which the condensate is returned to the boiler without exposure to the atmosphere, a head of water is interposed between the condensate pump and the suction of the feed pump, for example, by an elevated tank 4 connected by a pipe 5 to the connecting pipe 6 between the condensate pump 2 and the feed-pump 3. A float 8 in the tank may control the steam-supply valve 7 of the feedpump or may operate a valve admitting a supplementary supply of water to the pipe 6 either from a reserve tank which receives the overflow from the tank 4 or from another source. The float 8 may operate a by-pass valve which returns water from the delivery side of the condensate pump back to the condenser or to the suction side of the pump. Alternatively the by-passing may be controlled by the speed of the feed pump. A surface heater may be placed in the pipe 6 between its junction with the pipe 5 and the suction side of the feed pump 3. A pressure of steam may be created in the tank 4.
