Line-spacing mechanism. - In line-spacing mechanism for platen-shift machines, the shift frame is protected against shock, by mounting the space-adjusting stop on the carriage; the mechanism may be arranged to permit ready detachment of the platen. The platen shaft a<1> is mounted in open bearings B which form part of the platen frame and can slide in vertical slots c<1> in the carriage C. The line-spacing lever R, pivoted on the carriage, engages a slide J which is slotted to engage guide studs K, M on the carriage. The stud M is formed with three stops, two stops m<4>, m<5> being shown, at different distances from the axis, and can be turned to bring any of these stops into the path of a lug i<3> on the slide. The stud is retained by a spring-pressed ball N engaging depressions m<2> in a disc m<1> on the stud. A pawl D, co-operating with a ratchetwheel A on the platen shaft, is pivoted on a slide D' arranged beneath the platen shaft. The slide D<1> is slotted to engage studs b<2>, b<3> on the bearing B, and is provided with a pin d<5> engaging the forked end of a lever F which is pivoted at the middle on the bearing and carries a roller H engaging a lug i<1> on the slide K. A returning- spring E is connected to the slide D<1>. The platen can be readily removed without being obstructed by the line-spacing mechanism.
