Line-spacing mechanism.-In mechanism of the kind comprising a line-spacing pawl normally disengaged from a ratchet-wheel and adjustable to vary the line-spacing by means of a forked guide-member, a slide 13, connected at one end to the line-spacing lever 10 and having the other end free, can be raised or lowered by means of a forked guide 41 to adjust the point of engagement of a tooth 16 on the free end of the slide with the ratchet-wheel 17. The slide is formed with a slot, 35 loosely engaging a lug 34 on the platen frame 23, engagement being maintained by means of a spring 45. The wall 36 of the slot limits the feed-movement of the slide, overthrow being prevented by engagement of the lug with the bottom of the slot. In the normal position a returning-spring 21 connected to the line-spacing lever holds a nose 32 on the slide in contact with an ear 33 on the platen frame. The forked guide 41 is formed with a cam 44 engaging a surface 43 on the slide, and can be rocked on the platen shaft 18 to raise or lower the free end of the slide, a spring detent 46 retaining the guide in the set position. The mechanism is shown as adjusted for single spacing, the slide being lowered for double spacing. For effecting line-spacing without returning the carriage, the platen frame may be provided with a finger-piece 61 forming a countergrip for the line-spacing lever. To facilitate assembling, the pivot 12 of the line-spacing lever may be formed with a shank 28 which enters a lug 30 on the platen frame and is secured by a screw 31. The ratchet-wheel 17 engages a rollerdetent 51 mounted on a spring 54, the pivot 52 of the roller engaging a cam 56a on a releasing- lever 58. When the detent is released, the pivot engages a notch 60 in the lever.
