Abstract
169,269. Rapson, F. L. June 21, 1920. Tyre attachments to rims.-One beaded edge of the wheel-rim is formed with one or more portions hinged to the remainder or to the rim body, the hinged portion or portions having a flange or lugs for attachment purposes, resilient packing being filled between the flange &c. and the abutting face of the wheel. The rim base and the hinged portion or portions are also formed with co-operating inclined faces. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the portion 11 is hinged to the fixed part 5 of one edge of the rim and is secured in position by bolts 16 passed through flanges 8, 13 on the rim-base 1 and the portion 11 respectively. The inclined faces on the parts are shown at 9, 10, a rubber &c. packing-ring 14 being fitted between the flanges 8, 13. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which one edge of the rim is formed by two main hinged portions 11 and intermediate short hinged members 21. so that the whole of one side of the rim may be opened for tyre manipulation. In the construction shown in Fig. 13, the hinged portion 11 is secured in position by yokes 38 pivoted on the rim-base 1 and adapted to engage grooved lugs 34 on the portion 11. Resilient packing 33 is fitted btween the inclined faces 9, 10 and similar packing 37 is fitted between the lugs 34 and complementary lugs 35 on the rim 1. In the further modification shown in Fig. 15, the enlarged ends 41 of pivoted latches 42 are passed through apertures 40 in the flange 34 of the hinged portion 11. The latches are maintained in the operative position shown by the pressure of the tyre on the heads 47 of pins 45 carried by the other ends of the latches.
