Variable-speed and reversing gearing applied to a press comprises means for effecting a rapid downward setting movement, a slow pressing movement, and a rapid withdrawal. A pulley d on a shaft d<2> drives in the same. direction through a pinion d<4> and an idler clutch member e, f. The member e drives reversely through a pinion d<6> a third clutch member g. The members e, f, g are mounted loosely upon a driven shaft h, and are coupled thereto by clutches q, f<2>, g<2>. The clutch q, which lies within an annulus E<4> on the member e. is provided with lugs q<2> extending through apertures in an annulus p slidable upon, but rotatively connected to the spindle h by a key p<2> ; levers q<6> pivoted to the lugs q<2>, carry adjustable screws q<4> to engage the annulus p and arms q<5> adapted to be engaged by a cam m<4> on a sleeve m. By moving the sleeve m to the left of Fig. 2, the clutch q is closed and the spindle h is driven through the member e to impart the slow downward movement to the press bar b. The sleeve m is connected by a sleeve j to the clutch g<2>, so that movement of the sleeve m to the right effects the rapid reverse or upward movement. The clutch f<2>, which effects the rapid descent of the bar, is operated by a sleeve n. The press bar operations are selected by a lever having two perpendicular pivotal movements adapted for the purpose.
