Abstract

166,966. Howe, W. K. April 23, 1920. Pilot valve apparatus.- Relates to valves actuated in part by fluid pressure control, the control of an auxiliary valve actuated by fluid pressure and by electricity. Fig. 1 shows one form of train apparatus in which, when the magnet 17<1> is de-energized, air pressure passes from the reservoir by way of pipe 9 and valve EPV to pipe 8 and the cylinder 4, and thence by way of the restricted passage 24 to the cylinder 26. The piston 5 is urged to the left and tends to open the driver's valve. If the driver holds the valve closed, the pressure in cylinder 26 after a time rises sufficiently to close the contact 30 and enables the magnet 17<2> to be energized by closing the contact K. If the driver causes or allows a service application of the brakes, a second restricted passage 32 is opened and the valve may be reset after a shorter interval. Fig. 6 shows a construction of the valve EPV. The port 11 to the pressure pipe 9 is normally closed by the spring 22, and the magnet 17 and the pipe 8 is open to atmosphere at the port 19. On de-energization of the magnet, the pressure at the port 11 opens the valve and acts on the piston 12 to keep open the port 14 until such time as the pressure is so reduced that the magnet can overcome its action and re-close the valve. Such a valve may be used in conjunction with an auxiliary reservoir fed through a small orifice which feeds the reservoir at a less rate than air escapes from the outlets on the cylinder 4 which may have an additional hand-controlled vent which the driver may open to allow earlier re-setting by the magnet, which in this case has one coil only, which is momentarily de-energized.
