Abstract

163,494. Lavender, W. S. Feb. 21, 1920. Sliding-jaw wrenches.-In wrenches of the kind comprising two jaws each provided with a shank, the shank of one jaw being pivoted to its jaw and engaging a recess in the shank of the other jaw, teeth on contacting faces preventing relative motion of the jaws, the teeth are formed on opposite faces of the pivoted shank and engage corresponding teeth on the side faces of the recess. The jaw 2 is provided with a shank 1 slidable in a recess in the jaw 4 to which is pivoted at 7 a shank 6 having serrated edges 10 engaging corresponding serrations on the side faces of a recess in the shank 1 preferably formed by fixing two plates 8 having serrated edges to the shank. The shanks may be retained in their locked positions by a spring, or by a member 11 slidable or, as shown, pivoted with respect to the shank 1, or an embracing member having two resilient ends may be used. To prevent side-play a projection 13 is fixed to shank 4 and forms a guide for the shank 1.
