E. BRADLEY PIPE WRENCH Filed Nov. 18. 1921 E F My Patented July 29, 1924.
PATENT i OFFICE.
UNITED STATES.
EDVJARD BRADLEY,'OF OGDEN, ILLINOIS.
PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed November is, 1921. Serial No. 516,158.
To all whom 2'25 may concern.
Be it known that 'I, EDWARD BRADLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Ogden, in the county of Champaign and'State of Illinois,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to, pipe wrenches and more particularly to a pipe wrench hav is simple in construction, strong and durable and which it is believed may tured at a reasonably low cost. I
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the continuance of the following description.
In the drawings V Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the wrench. Figure 3 is a viewin side elevation showing the wrench in operative relation to a piece of pipe or other work. r
In the drawings, 10 designates the handle of the wrench which is enlarged and'thickened at the jaw ends as indicated at 11, from which thickened portion projects the rigid jaw member 12.
At the outer end where the rigid jaw and handle meet, the latter is provided with a shouldered portion formed by cut-outs on opposite sides of a centrally projecting tongue 13, the cut-outs being indicated rebe manufacvide socket-s for the circular bearing ends to tongue 13 of the handle by means of a end to prevent separation of the parts.
spectively at 14 and 15 and serving to propivot pin 19 which may be headed at each The stationary or rigid jaw 12 is somewhat cam shaped in design, being provided with a gripping edge 20 projecting forwardly of the shouldered portion of the handle in a circular arch as shown to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawings. The
"providing a lip useful for obtaining a pur-' chase on pipes before the jaws are fully opened, The inner or working edge of the outer jaw is curved to conform to the curvature of the cam shaped inner jaw and the working edges of both'jaws may be suitably recessed or grooved transversely to pro vide the necessary jaw. teeth.
From the dotted line construction of F ig- V ure 1 it will be noted that the movable jaw is permitted to swing outwardly from the rigid jaw until its shank is substantially at right angles to the handle, the outward adjustment of the movable jaw being limited only by the rear walls of cut-outs 14 and 15. Consequently, pipes of varying sizes may be engaged between thejaws of this wrench and the cam edge of the lower jaw will tend to bind the pipe more securely between the jaws as the handle is forced downwardly forturnmg the wrench. Furthermore, the provisionf of the recesses at the end of the handle enables the movable jaw to be pivoted thereto inwardly of the upper edge of the handle, thereby avoiding any projection beyond the latter and permitting the two jaws to more snugly engage each other.
From the foregoing it is believed that the,
advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily understood and there forefurther detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
lVhatis claimed is 7 A A pipe wrench comprising a handle having a relatively thickened portion at one end provided with an integral extension disposed below the plane of the handle to present a rigid jaw, said handle being cut out at a place along the upper edge where the handle and jaw meet to provide a centrally pro-- 'ectin ton ue and circular sockets on 0 osite sides of the tongue, the said rigid jaw being cam shaped and provided with a gripping face extending forwardly of the cut out in the arc of a circle, and a movable jaw pivotally engaged with the said central tongue of the out out and having circular bearing ends engaging in the said sockets,
the said movable jaw being arched to engage over the gripping face of the rigid 10 jaw and being of such length that when the jaws are fully closed the end of the movable jaw'extends over beyond the end of the rigid jaw, providing a lip for a useful purpose.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EDWARD BRADLEY.
