1 Claim.
This invention relates to pipe wrenches of the type shown and described in United States Patent No. 1,320,615, issued to me November 4, 1919, and more particularly to pipe wrenches of the 5 chain type.
Among the salient objects of the present invention is to provide a pipe chain wrench which is in better alinement and better balance than those now on the market, thus making a wrench which l will not tend to twist downwardly so much when used on vertical pipe; to provide a wrench of the character referred to in which the chain is attached or anchored at a greater distance from the work engaging face of the jaws, thus causl5 ing a better gripping effect of the jaws on the pipe; to provide in a wrench of the character referred to a longer connecting link between the sides of the wrench and pivotally connecting the end of the chain therewith, thus giving a greater 20 arc of engagement ofthe pipe along the operating jaws of the wrench; to secure the jaws in such a wrench with bolts which are at opposite sides of the pivotal connection of the connecting link for the chain, and in general, to provide an improved pipe chain wrench which is more symmetrical and beautiful than the wrench in the patent referred to.
In order to more definitely explain my improved wrench, I have shown the same on the accom- 30 panying sheet of drawings which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a side elevation oi a wrench embodying my invention, showing it connected to a pipe in full lines for turning in one direction and showing in light broken lines how the pivotal connection of the chain can be swung to reverse the direction of operation;
Figure 2 is an edge view of the wrench shown in Fig. 1;
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views taken, respectively, on lines 3 3, and 4-4 of Fig. 2; with parts broken away to reduce the size of the view;
Figure 5 is a top plan View of the end of the handle disconnected; and
Figure 6 is a bottom plan View of the end of said handle.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 'I designates the handle, shown to be of round form and at its attached end being formed with two opposite 50 flat faces, as 8, 8, and a reduced thickness portion 9, and the extreme end III of forked form,
as at II, the opposite sides of said forked portion terminating in holding toes I2, I2, for a purpose again referred to.
The jaws, I3, I3, are the same 55 and are adapted to nt upon the opposite sides of the end of said handle, and secured thereto by means of two bolts, I4, I4, at opposite ends of thev reduced thickness portion 9, as will be clear from the drawing. The jaws are thus spaced laterally apart, as seen in Fig. 2, and of symmetrical form with curved pipe engaging portions I3', I3', with their teeth pointing outwardly, and with rearward curved pipe engaging portions I5, I5, with their teeth pointing rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 1.
Pivotally connected between the opposite sides of the reduced thickness portion 9, and the jaws, are two link members I6, I6, one end of said links being connected near the upper edge of the reduced handle portion, as at I'I and adapted to swing forwardly or rearwardly between the bolts I4, I4, said links IB, I6, having secured between their outer ends a pipe chain I8, of the usual type and adapted to be placed around a pipe, or other round object, and to be brought up between the outer ends or" the side jaws, in the manner indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, hooked over the holding toes l2, I2, the pivot pins of said chain being extended shortly beyond the side links making up the chain, in a known manner.
I have also shown an intermediate jaw member I9 secured to the underside of the end of the handle, between the side jaws I3, I3, as seen in Fig. 4, and secured to said handle end by means of a bolt or rivet 20, and a short stud 2| inserted into the meeting faces of the end of the handle and the intermediate jaw member I9, as indicated in Fig. 4.
The pipe is designated P and in Fig. 1 is shown with the wrench attached thereto in solid lines for turning it clockwise. In this figure, in light broken lines, the links I3 are shown swung rearwardly and the pipe held against the jaws at I5, I5, in which position the engagement yis such that the pipe can be turned in the opposite direction, as indicated by the small arrows within said pipe.
It will be noted that the jaw members I3, I3, are in straight and xed alinement with the handle and that the length of the connecting links I6, It for the chain and the clearance for their swing, makes it possible to adjust the wrench quickly to reverse the direction of operation on the pipe.
Attention is called to the fact that with the side jaw members I3, I3, secured to the opposite sides of the handle, and at the reduced thickness portion thereof and in alinement therewith, there is provided spaces between said jaws and the opposite sides of said reduced thickness portion and in these spaces, nearer the top edge of said reduced thickness portion of said handle, the chain connecting link is pivotally connected at its upper end. This gives a substantial overlap of the link members upon the opposite sides of said reduced thickness portion and also said intermediate jaws I9, so that there is no play or lateral movement of the free end of the link. 'Ihis is an improvement over my other structures and makes for more satisfactory operation. It makes; for a stronger connection also of the chain to the body of the wrench. v
I do not limit the invention to the details of construction and arrangement shown, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claim.
I claim:
A pipe wrench including a handle having its work end reduced in thickness and'widened on the side opposite from the work engaging edge, a pair of chain link members pivotally attached on the widened side of the reduced thickness of the handle whereby to give a longer swing to said chain members, a pair of jaw members bolted to opposite sides of said handle with two bolts at the opposite ends of said reduced portion of said body and through the thicker portions thereof, said jaw members being toothed at their rearward ends and at their forward ends and being symmetrical and longitudinally parallel with the length of said handle, whereby to give balance, va pipe embracing chain attached to the free end of said chain link members, and means on the end of the handle for detachably connecting the chain when placed around the work.
