Abstract

Field magnets; casings and frames.-The magnet cores of light-weight generators for vehicle lighting or the like consist of approximately rectangular stampings or plates each made of two parts of such a shape that form-wound field coils may be used and the joints in successive plates may be made to overlap in assembly to give a good magnetic contact throughout the pile. A four-pole form is shown in Fig. 3 wherein the two parts d, d<1> of each plate are similar and carry two of the poles D. The pile is secured together by bolts E passing through all of the plates and the aluminium or other end castings of the machine. The end castings of the machine enclose a sheet metal covering c within which is a space G for a cut-out switch. A two-pole two-part plate is shown in Fig. 6 with a single polar projection. D for a form-wound coil. To ensure residual magnetism in the core, some of the plates may be of steel of the requisite retentivity, the remainder being of soft iron or mild steel.
