Field carriages; mountings; recoil apparatus.- Consists in modifications of the apparatus described in Specification 130,718 for increasing the range of elevation adjustment in gun carriages and mountings by a displacement of the trunnions about the elevating pinion as centre. Means for varying the length of recoil in accordance with the adjusted position of the trunnions may be combined with the apparatus, and also means for balancing the weight of the gun and cradle about the axis of the elevating pinion. In the form shown, spring-mounted bearings I for the trunnions b of the cradle B are carried by two side members H journaled at the rear on the axles e', e<2> which have the same geometric axis as the elevating pinion E, and are mounted in the cheeks of the gun carriage C. The gun is elevated by the gearing e, E, D, and, to change the range of elevation, the gun, cradle and side frames are turned around the axles e<1>, e<2> by means of the gearing W<3>, W<2>, W<1>, W, H<1> assisted by a spring balancer X. The side members H are locked in the adjusted position by a transverse bolt R which is passed through holes in the carriage cheeks and through registering holes in the side members H, H. The balance cylinder X is jointed at x to the carriage C and the rod Y, carrying a finger y, is jointed at y<1> to a web H<2> connecting the side members. On raising the side members about the rear axles, a. rod Z, which is slidably-mounted on the web H<2>, is pushed forwards and turns the piston rod s of a variablestroke recoil brake S by means of a lug f on a sector-gear F engaging in a cam-groove z<1> in the rod Z. In a modification, the rack-and-pinion gear H', W is replaced by a two-cylinder hydropneumatic jack, and the recoil is adjusted by causing the insertion of the locking-bolt R, in the position for the higher range of elevations, to connect-up automatically a short-stroke recoil brake.
