[Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] In a suspension device for the driving wheels of vehicles such as mobile cranes, each wheel is supported by a lever connected to the vehicle frame by two resilient suspension members of different flexibility arranged in series, one operative under no-load conditions during road travel and the other, more rigid, becoming operative only after the first member has been fully deflected. The vehicle frame 1 is of T- shape, the limbs of which are of tubular section, the rear wheels being mounted in pairs on axles 18 which are each carried at the end of an arm 9 pivoted to the frame at 10 and connected by the springs 11, 12. Each pair of wheels comprises an outer driven wheel 7 and an inner carrier-wheel (not shown). The spring 11 may comprise helical compression springs in series, while the more rigid spring 12 may comprise an oleopneumatic device, a rubber block or a pile of spring washers, e.g. Belleville, washers. Each axle 18 is capable of oscillating about its point of connection with the arm 9, the outer wheel 7 of the pair being spaced nearer to the arm 9 than the inner carrier-wheel to obtain increased adhesion. To give increased stability and to take the load from the driving wheels 7 when the crane is in operation, detachable wheels may be positioned at the outer end of each axle 18. These wheels may alternatively be retractable, being carried by an arm pivoted about an inclined axis and swinging upwards to a position within the track of the outer running wheels when not in use. The front steering wheels 3, 4 are carried by a member 5 pivotally mounted about an axle 6 on the frame and may be arranged as described in Specification 19669/45, as open to inspection under Sect. 91.
