Joint-making packing.- In forming a joint between a cylinder and its cover, e.g. the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine, a pair of narrow facing strips is formed on one or both parts. The Figure shows a water - jacketed cylinder casting, in which a raised strip 2 is formed round the periphery of the casting, and a similar strip 5 round each cylinder and valve chamber. Similar strips 6, 7, are formed on the cylinder cover. The strips may be wider between the bolts than adjacent to the bolts. A copper and asbestos or other washer 8 may be placed in the joint. Holes 10 in the flanges and 11 in the washer, which may be out of register, permit cooling water to pass from the jacket to the joint.
