When the shaft a is actuated, the casing n is prevented from turning backwards by a ratchet clutch t, and the shaft b is driven slowly in the same direction. When the shaft b is driven by its engine, the gearing turns solid, the clutch t overrunning. Any resistance upon the shaft a would cause the casing n to overrun the shaft b. Such effect is limited by having the worm d movable axially to bring clutch dogs u into action. Alternatively, a ratchet clutch between the shafts a and b may be used for this purpose. A yielding spring latch s, Fig. 1, or magnetic friction clutch may be used to prevent damage due to a backfire.
