Packing, non-metallic.-Packing for the stuffing-boxes of pumps, valves. &c. consists of cork which is compressed axially so as to be permanently reduced in length. The cork may be previously impregnated with graphite grease at a pressure of from 215 to 220 lb. per sq. in. The packing may be manufactured from a tube, the length of which may be reduced from 5 to 50 per cent by axial pressure. The application of the packing is described for retaining lubricant in an oscillating valve-operating sleeve for an internalcombustion engine.
