Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Consists in a rubbing-collar device for preventing leakage through the crank-shaft bearings of an internalcombustion engine in which compression takes place in the crank casing. A ring a is pressed by a ring c of leather &c. against the end of the bearing. The ring c is bent so that the convexity is inwards, and is secured to a ring b fast on the shaft. Should any leakage take place along the shaft, the ring c is pressed outwards and presses the ring a against the end of the bearing.
