Abstract
157,135. Shepherd, F. D. Sept. 12, 1918, [Convention date]. Valves; valve-gear.-A beat valve 11 for inlet or exhaust is closed by a spring 19 arranged in a gas-tight, water-jacketed housing 18, this housing and the water-jacketed valve guide 17 being integral with the detachable water-cooled cylinder head. A stem 16, which may be integral with or separate from the valve, extends into the spring casing. Its guide has a shoulder 37 to scrape carbon off the valve-stem. The valve-spring bears at its lower end on a disc 20, which may be integral with or separate from the valve-stem 16 and may be recessed to receive the end of the stem. It is grooved at its edge to permit free movement. The upper end of the spring bears on a disc 22 which is faced to make a gas-tight joint with the cover 24, and is grooved or notched to permit lubricant to enter. In one form, the valve is lifted by a tappet rod 14, which has a rounded end to engage in a wide recess 15 in the head of the valve. The inner walls of the casing, and the surfaces of the various parts within it, are coated with copper or other material which will resist corrosion by the gases leaking into the casing. Specification 156,699 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 157,133.
