Ruling-machines.- Apparatus for testing the degree of sizing of paper comprises a number of tracers 5 the jaws of which are adjustable for ruling ink lines of graduated thickness ¢ to 2“ millimeters, for example, on the paper to be tested. A table 17 carrying the paper is traversed by means of a spring drum 22. The movement of the table is controlled by arms or fans acting as a brake or governor and mounted on a shaft carrying a gear wheel 29, geared to a rack 24 on the table through gears 28, 27, 26, 25. A ratchet 32 serves to cut out the gearing to the arms or fans when the table is drawn outwards by the handle 23. The tracers are pivoted on a spindle 3 and carry adjustable weights 9 and depending arms 12. A bar 11 carried by arms 10 keyed to the spindle 3, when engaged bv the handle 23 at the end of the return travel of the table, lifts the tracers off the paper. An arm 13, also keyed on the spindle 3, carries a spring catch 15 which, by engaging a notch in a fixed sector 16, holds the tracers in inoperative position. Stops 37, 38, limit the traverse of the table. In operation, if, for example, the back of the paper remains white under the fourth line and is stained under the fifth line, the degree of sizing is given at 4/5 for a specified thickness of paper and a comparable formula may be obtained by dividing this value by, say, the weight of paper per square meter. The testing may be carried out by a single adjustable tracer, or pens may be used, and the table may be fixed and the tracers reciprocated by the mechanism used for the table.
