Abstract
642,801. Centring devices. SOC. GENEVOISE D' INSTRUMENTS DE PHYSIQUE. March 30, 1948, No. 8962. Convention date, April 10, 1947. [Class 83 (iii)] An attachment for centring the spindle 2 of a boring or drilling machine on the axis of a workpiece 28 comprises an arm 7 secured to the spindle, a dial-gauge 9 carried by a holder 10 slidably mounted on the arm, a toothed gear 5 loosely mounted on the spindle and having a handle 6 thereon, and a gear train Z1 to Z9 which is mounted on the arm and arranged so that when the gear 5 is held stationary by the handle 6, rotation of the spindle 2 is transmitted to the gauge 9 in such manner that the gauge remains oriented in the direction chosen by the operator and independent of the angular position of the spindle. The arm 7 is attached to a shaft 1 which is secured to the spindle 2 and has rails 11a, 11b along which the holder 10 is caused to move by a pinion 13 engaging a rack 14. The holder 10 is clamped in an adjusted position by a nut 15. The drive through the gear train, caused by holding the gear 5 as the arm 7 is rotating, is transmitted to the pinion Z9 on the gauge 9 by a shaft having a worm connection to the gears Z6, Z9. The worm connection to the latter gear is keyed to the shaft so as to be slidable thereon and allow adjustment of the holder 10 according to a scale on the arm 7. The gauge 9 is in a bearing 20 in the holder 10 and is supported by a spring 21. The end 22c of a bell-crank lever 22, pivotally mounted in the holder 10, bears on the outside diameter of the workpiece 28 and the other end 22a of the lever is urged by a spring 25 against the spring-plunger 24 of the gauge 9 so that a variation in the gauge reading indicates that the spindle 2 is not centred above the workpiece. To centre on a bore, the spring 25 is rendered inoperative by moving its retaining pin 26 according to gauge marks on the holder 10 and the arm 22c forced outwardly by the plunger 24.
