633,586. Testing physical qualities of paints &c. BECK, KOLLER, & CO. (ENGLAND), Ltd., KEENAN, H. W., and JELLINEK, J. H. Nov. 3, 1947, No. 29313. [Class 106 (ii)] The drying time of surface-coating materials is measured and recorded by apparatus comprising a box 1, Fig. 3, for supporting a number of plates 24 coated with the material, means for drawing a number of needles 21 across the coatings in a straight line and at constant speed, and an indicator 16 connected to the needles and moving over a scale member 15 for measuring the distance travelled by the needles at any time. The needles are carried in holders 20 on arms pivoted on a cross-bar 18, the latter being carried by a rod 17 secured to a T-shaped carriage 9. The carriage 9 has two half nuts 13, 14 engaging a lead screw 10, and is guided on two longitudinal rods 5, 6. The half nuts can be separated by moving arms 11, 12 apart, to allow the carriage to be moved freely along the screw 10. The indicator 16 is secured to the arm 12. The scale member 15 has four scales to suit four rotational speeds of the screw 10, and is rotatably mounted. A compartment in one end of the box houses a synchronous motor 25, Fig. 5, adapted to drive a shaft 26 on which are secured four gears 27- 30 of different sizes. The lead screw 10 extends into the compartment, and has four complementary gears 39-42 secured thereto. Intermediate gears 35-38, each carried by an arm 34 (not shown) pivoted about the shaft 26, can be swung separately into position to establish a drive between any gear on the shaft 26 and its complementary gear on the screw 10. Each arm 34 is controlled by a cam disc on a shaft which can be turned by a knob 48. The coated plates 24 are made of glass and fit in recesses in the top of the box; levers 25 (not shown) facilitate removal of the plates.
