Abstract

1535255 Electrolytic antifouling of seawater DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 23 April 1976 [25 April 1975] 16635/76 Heading C7B A seawater intake, e.g. for an electrolysis cell or on a ship, has a conduit 3 covered at its inlet by an electro-catalytically active anodic screen 1. A cathode 4 adjacent the anode, and which may project seawardly of the anode, is spaced therefrom by an insulator 5. The conduit may be conductive and insulated from the anode, or non- conductive. Plastics, concrete and ceramics are specified non-conductors. Insulator 5 may be a coating on the cathode or be separate and project beyond the cathode. A disc cathode may alternatively be used (Fig. 3). Conventional valve metal substrates coated with Pt and valve metal oxides are disclosed as anode. As cathode stainless steel, nickel (alloy) and Ti are disclosed. In Fig. 2, reference 10 is an insulating support. The cathode may be a ship's hull or may be a sacrificial metal to effect cathodic protection as well.
